Argument essay: Smoking

It has become common today to be against smoking. However, in my opinion, while smoking is harmful in some ways, I believe that it is beneficial in others. Let me first deal with the positive side of smoking.

The first point is, smoking people say, it makes them feel relaxed. For example, many people like to smoke before doing any important thing. Another argument is it’s an individual freedom; people can smoke in any place, if they don't see a "no-smoking" board.

Nowadays, governments and people know how dangerous smoking is. For example, smoking can cause many diseases like, cancers, heart diseases and death. Governments all over the world have banned commercials for smoking. Also, smokers spend a lot of money on cigarettes. Another argument is smokers can easily smoke marijuana or any kind of drugs, and that may destroy their lives. My opinion is, cigarettes are dangerous for people, especially kids and cost billions of dollars to cure people that get damaged by smoking.

In general, I feel that the world will  be a better place without smoking. Some places, like restaurants, bus stations, airplanes and public areas, should be completely no-smoking.

Reflection 3

In this semester, we do some type of writing, problems and solution, argument, graph line and tables. In this semester, we finish 11 writing, such us pie charts, bar graphs, problem & solution, tables, Line graphs and argument. Also we do a lot of practice in reading and listening. I think my English skill is better than last semester, but still I have a long way to improve my English skill. In this semester, I'm willing to get a B grade.

This table shows the information for underground train system in 5 cities.

The oldest train system is in London; it was established in 1863 with the longest length till now, which is 394 km. In 2010 the total passengers were 77 million. In Paris the underground train opened in 1900; the total length is 199 km. In 2010, the passengers for Paris trains were 189 million. Third is the Tokyo train system, opened in 1927; the total length is 155 km. Tokyo trains carried 192 million passengers, and this train system has the largest number of passengers. Kyoto city has got the smallest underground train system, which is 11 km, but it carried 45 million passengers in 2010. The newest underground train opened in 2001, in Boston; the total length is 28 km; the total number of passengers in 2010 was 50 million.

London has the oldest and largest underground train system. Boston hast the newest and Tokyo's carried the most passenger in 2010.

Argument essay: Mobile phone

Should using mobile phone while driving be banned?

Those days, many accidents happen because people are using mobile phone while driving. What are the pros and cons of using mobile phone?

One of the main argument againsts banning is using mobile phones, for emergency cases; if something happen to your car, or you get lost, you need your mobile phone to call someone to help you. There is also the late argument that, if you get stuck because is an accident in front of you, you need to call your supervisor to inform him that you are late, or any one who is waiting for you.

There are, however, many arguments in favor with of bannig. With the statistic shown by police every year about the number of accidents caused by mobile phones, it is not necessary to use it while you are driving. I agree with governments that they make fines for those who are using mobile phones while driving. However, you can use your mobile in your car, but you need to find a safe place to park before using it. It is very difficult to do two thing safely and simultaneously if one of them is driving.

Having your mobile phone in your car is possible but you need to find a safe place to park before using it. Otherwise you can use a mobile phone while driving only for emergency cases.

World Population Growth

The line graph shows population growth in richer and pooper countries between 1750 and 2150. The reference for this graph is done by United Nation Population Prospects, the 1998 Revision, and estimates by the Population Reference Bureau.

It shows in 1750, the total world population was less than one billion and people in less developed countries was more by 2 or 3 times than more developed countries. After 250 years, especially in 2000, a crazy growth in world population by 6.1 billion but the total population in more developed countries was, about one billion only, while the rest was in less developed countries.  However, the graph, estimated the total world population growth in 2150 will reach almost 10 billion and this rise will be on less developed countries only.

While the estimated growth in less developed countries in the next 150 years, it means more poor people, more crimes and maybe a lot of wars in poor countries.

Abu Dhabi Traffic

Like many cities worldwide, Abu Dhabi suffers from traffic congestion and parking problems. This essay examines the causes and the possible solution to the problem.

Let's begin with causes. The most obvious cause is economic development, not in Abu Dhabi only, but in the Gulf Countries. Everyone knows that Abu Dhabi has become one of the big economic cities in the world. Many construction sites are built and in this situation you see a lot of heavy and slow vehicles on the roads, which make serious traffic jams. In addition, it's easy to buy a car, in the UAE. Any bank can give you a loan, if your salary is above 5,000 AED. Also the petrol is cheap. Another cause is growing population. There is a big difference between 30 years ago and now. As a result, an increase by 90% in the population since 30 years ago. The local families became bigger and each family has more than two cars. Also the rich foreign families in Abu Dhabi have more than one car, which means a lot of cars in Abu Dhabi. However, people in Abu Dhabi are using cars because there is not enough public transports. Also, it's hard to find a parking place in a lot of Abu Dhabi areas, so people are parking the car in the road and the roads became smaller and the traffic is increased.

As there are many causes,so there are many solutions. One of the solutions is to improve the existing roads and improve public transport like, buses, taxi and metro. Another solution is to make many highways and bigger roads. The paid parking is a good solution in Abu Dhabi and it has made a change in many areas around Abu Dhabi. Also, the government should make sure the new buildings have underground parking.

Finally, Abu Dhabi government has established a new department which is  the Department of Transport. They work hard to solve the problems about traffic. My opinion is the metro in Abu Dhabi will improve the transport and reduce the traffic

Growth of Urban Agglomeration, 1950-2015

The chart shows the population of nine cities over the past sixty years, and the next five years.

The chart shows an increase in population in all cities, except London. The population in London between 1950 and 1970, was around 8 million but in 2000 it became around 6 million and it shows the same in 2015. In New York City there is no big change since 1970 to now, from about  12M to 16M  in 2000, rising to 17M in 2015.  The other 7 cities show a huge change in population. Cairo will reach almost 14M by 2015, from about 2.5M in1950. The rise in Mexico City is double, from about 8M by 1970 to almost 16M in 2015. By 2015, Lagos City, Bombay City and Tokyo City will all see a massive increase around 23-26M in population, from about 2-6M in 1950.

Only London has a fall in population, 1950-2015. While the other 8 cities show a crazy growth in population.

Young people and drugs

 Drugs cause multiple problems to communities. Most countries have lost billions of dollars because of drugs. Now, most of the drug dealers are young people.

If we start asking why young people take drugs we will find many answers. The main reason is parents. Some parents are busy at work and when they come back home, they finish work late. The second most important reason is school. School is responsible for the students; if the young people find bad students, who are already drugs users, it's easy to become a drug user. Another reason is leisure time. Young people spend it in parties or very dangerous places where it is easy to get drugs. The fourth reason is the police. If we have good police officers, the drug dealers are struggling to sell the drugs. Also, if you know bad friends, it’s easy to be drug users.

To fix this, first all ,the government, police, society and family must cooperate. Then the family should give their children some time. They should know where they are going, and who are their friends. The school is important and has to put strong rules on drugs and students who are drugs users. The young people must use their free time in sport or a favorite hobby. However, the police or government should make drugs the first priority. Finally, good company is always needed; we should choose our friends clearly and carefully.

In conclusion, drugs destroy everything easily; millions of families were destroyed because of drugs. My opinion is to choose your friends carefully because good friends show us the good way always.

Date Production

The graph shows the top ten date-producing countries and their annual production in tonnes in 2001. Ten countries in the Gulf region and northern Africa are featured.

First, Egypt took the lion's share of production with over million tones but Iran is a close second with almost 0.9 million. Following them came the UAE and Saudi Arabia, rivaling each other with about 740,000 tonnes each. Pakistan and Iraq, with outputs of approximately 630,000, were not far behind. Algeria supplied the world with nearly 400,000 tonnes and Oman around a quarter of a million. In contrast, harvests in Oman and countries in northern Africa are far less plentiful. Finally, Sudan's and Libya's crops yielded under 0.2 million each.

In summary, Egypt and Iran account for the majority of goods whilst Sudan and Libya are in the minority.

The pie charts show Valentine's Day gifts that men and women in the USA buy for each other.

The top three gifts bought by men and women are cards, candy and flowers. As shown in the charts, the most popular gift is cards. Over a quarter of women buy cards while almost a fifth of men buy cards. The second most common gift by women is candy, Which is 21% while 16% of men buy flowers. Also, 11% of females buy Flowers and 14% of males buy candy. However, jewelry is nearly the same for both men and women, 9-10 %. Also, more men bought lingerie 7% and spa/personal care 6% whereas 10% of women prefer a type of gift like perfume/cologne.

In conclusion, flowers are my best gift for Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day is a day that men celebrate with their wives or girlfriend.

The UK government

The pie-chart shows where the UK government spent its money in 1996.

Let us begin with the biggest segment. The UK government spent £100 billion on social security. Then came health and personal social services with £ 53 billion. The education budget was around £38 billion. Also, the industry agriculture and employment budget was the same as housing, heritage and environment, around £13-15 billion. Then Defense got £22 billon. Another spending by the UK government was on other expenditure and debt interest, around £23-25 billon. Moreover, the budget for transport was £9 billion . Finally, low and order was £17 billion.

In conclusion, the total budget is £315 billion. My opinion is the UK government should spend more on Education and health and personal social services and transport. Also, reduce the amount of social security.
